Students Out to Serve is an event sponsored by Kansas District Nazarene Missions International (NMI) and Nazarene Youth International (NYI). This weekend retreat brings students together to worship, play and serve together. The retreat is intentional providing opportunities to serve through community service, help our Kansas District Nazarene church body and hear how the church is alive and active around the world through a missionary speaker.
GUEST SPEAKER: Nikolaj and Lydia Sawatzky are global missionaries for the Church of the Nazarene in the Eurasia Region. Nikolaj's current responsibility is the development of literature in all of the Eurasia Region. He works with 30 language and literature committees in the region. Lydia is serving in the regional office in the areas of hospitality, guest accommodation, and management of vehicles and office work. Nikolaj and Lydia will be sharing how translation opens doors to sharing the Gospel of Jesus to people who have never heard of Christ.
Saturday night's guest speaker, Ilonka Deaton, will be presenting an interactive service designed specifically for students in mind called "Hope Holders." Her background is that she was a victim of sexual abuse at a very young age while involved in the professional music industry in addition to growing up in a single parent home with many difficult situations. Since she found Christ in her adolescent years—she has been a transformed believer! She is an amazing Spirit-filled follower of Christ who travels worldwide to speak out for hope against many forms of evil and wrong doing that happen all around us every day. At the beginning of the evening, students will have the opportunity to submit some of the issues and questions that not only they face and deal with in their relationships, friendships and world but those they are concerned about in their friends lives as well. The interactive service will have discussion and problem solving elements that will help not only those students AND adult sponsors but will give them tools to help and encourage and ultimately seek to bring HOPE to those around them! Ilonka’s work with national crisis hotlines has been instrumental in her developing skills to teach students how to be the voice of hope in the lives of their friends and people around them. We are excited to be able to participate in this service being hosted at Wichita First Church of the Nazarene at 7pm.
